Horwood Energy Centre, Keele University

EHP Ltd have been appointed by Keele University on two projects relating to the Horwood Energy Centre; the first being the extension of the existing boiler house, as part of the central drive infrastructure works, and secondly to refurbish the existing first floor offices to house the Keele SEND Project, creating a new entrance porch and Post Graduate Research accommodation.

The Smart Energy Network Demonstrator (SEND), a European first, is an at scale environment providing a platform that allows energy generation, distribution, storage, forecasting and energy balancing to be intelligently carried out across different energy sources using the Keele University campus as a genuine ‘living laboratory.’

The boiler extension is clad in diagonally laid larch cladding that will soften over time and blend the building in with its surrounding.  The Entrance Pod, with stair and lift access is double height with full height curtain walls to three of four elevations and high-level Larch Louvres that keep the south facing building cool in summer and create some cohesion with the boiler house extension.

Completed 2019.
